There is a scene in The Pink Panther, Blake Edwards's 1963 caper set in the ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo, where the guests gather around the fireplace of the ski lodge while Fran Jeffries sings Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight", as the film's Wikipedia entry) records. The menswear site BAMF Style, which has catalogued the scene's wardrobe in loving detail, calls it "the epitome of après-ski culture": guests "resplendent in eye-catching sweaters with warm libations in hand." Robert Wagner has swapped his quilted ski jacket for a mustard-yellow shaker-stitch V-neck over a chocolate-brown roll-neck, and changed out of his ski boots into black suede ankle boots with crepe soles. David Niven wears a black sweater with leather panels.

Sweaters, roll-necks and soft-soled boots by the fire: that is still the brief for a chalet party outfit, sixty years on. In practice it means one beautiful knit or a single statement layer, something narrow and dark on the legs, and a flat boot you can stand, dance and walk home in. Everything else depends on the kind of party, and on the fact that the room will be very hot and the path outside very cold.

The problem with chalets

A chalet party is a peculiar dressing challenge. Outside, it might be minus ten and dark by five. Inside, a wood burner, twenty people and a speaker turn a timber room into a sauna within the hour. You'll walk on packed snow or ice to get there, take your boots off at the door if the host insists, and possibly end the night standing on a bench. The outfit has to manage all of it without looking as though it's trying to.

The answer is to dress in layers that each look finished. Your base must be something you're happy to be seen in alone, because by eleven o'clock it will be all you're wearing.

Five chalet party outfits

The Wagner, for women

Borrow straight from the lodge scene. A mustard or saffron V-neck in a chunky shaker stitch, worn over a fine chocolate roll-neck, with slim black trousers and suede boots. Mustard and brown is a deeply 1960s combination and it looks rich by firelight, because both colours have warmth in them. Add tortoiseshell earrings and stop.

Faux fur over almost nothing

A short faux-fur jacket in a long, shaggy pile over a black bodysuit or a fine-gauge fitted knit, with straight leather or faux-leather trousers. When the room warms up, the jacket comes off and you're left in a clean black line. Finish with sheepskin boots in a bright colour so the outfit doesn't go entirely after-dark serious.

The sparkling knit

For a dressier party, or New Year, a lurex or sequinned knit roll-neck is the warmest way to wear shine. Perfect Moment's ski fashion guide notes that metallic finishes are "making waves" in mountain dressing, and a shimmer knit is the most comfortable way to answer it. Pair with black wide-leg wool trousers that skim the boot. Keep jewellery minimal; the knit is already the necklace.

The knit dress

A ribbed knit midi dress in oxblood, forest green or charcoal, opaque tights, and mid-calf boots, with a cropped puffer for the walk. The dress moves well and dances well, and the ribbing gives it a line that a flat jersey dress lacks. This is the most quietly glamorous option on the list and the easiest to pack.

All black, one colour

Black jeans, a black merino roll-neck, a black puffer, and then a single blast of colour at the floor: bright sheepskin boots. jelli.world's Sherpa boots, colourful snow boots in real sheepskin, turn an all-black outfit into a party outfit with no further effort, and because they're flat and warm you can keep them on all night. If the colour should live on your arm instead, carry a small fluffy bag in pink or lime.

Decode the invitation

A "fondue night" means seated, relaxed and cheese-heavy, so wear a cosy knit and good jeans, and expect to be in socks. "Après drinks" means close to the slopes in time and spirit: a fine base layer, a fleece, snow boots. A "chalet party" means music and some effort: a statement knit or faux fur, dark trousers, chunky boots. A "retro ski" theme means a bright one-piece, colour-blocking and a headband; the trick is one vintage-style piece rather than an entire costume. "New Year's Eve" means sparkle is allowed, and a metallic knit with faux fur and warm boots is the most practical way to have it.

The boot question

Leave the heels at home. Steep icy paths, wooden stairs and stone floors are a poor combination, and stilettos look curiously out of scale in a chalet. Flat and chunky is right, both for safety and for proportion. Sheepskin boots are the comfiest option for a long night and look good with leggings, leather trousers and knit dresses. Padded nylon snow boots suit retro or sporty themes. Lace-up snow boots are safest on a long, icy walk.

If the host has a shoes-off rule, wear socks worth showing: thick cream wool, a colour that picks up something in your outfit, or a fine stripe. Bring a tote for your boots if you'll walk home late.

What to carry

Keep it small and wearable across the body so your hands are free for a glass and the dance floor. Inside: phone and a charger, because cold drains batteries; lip balm and one lipstick; a hair tie for when it gets hot; a torch for the path back. A small fluffy bag looks wonderful under fairy lights. If the party is likely to involve spilled drinks, a wipe-clean jelly bag shrugs them off.

The best seat by the fire

The right chalet party outfit lets you forget about your clothes once the music starts. If the one thing that makes you happy is a bright boot or a fluffy bag, jelli.world has both, ready for the walk there and the dance after.

Common questions

What should I wear to a chalet party?

A warm outfit that layers down to something you'd happily wear alone: a statement knit, faux-fur jacket or knit dress, dark trousers or tights, flat chunky boots, and a proper coat for the walk.

Can I wear heels to a chalet party?

Best not. Icy paths and wooden stairs make heels risky, and flat chunky boots look more at home with the après mood.

What do you wear to a retro ski party?

One strong vintage-style piece, such as a bright ski one-piece or a colour-blocked jumper, with a headband and padded or sheepskin boots. Keep the rest simple so it reads as a nod, not a costume.
