When Raf Simons showed his first collection for Calvin Klein in February 2017, at the company's headquarters on West 39th Street, he sent out cowboy-inspired boots, denim on denim and outerwear lined with American quilts. The campaign that followed was shot by Willy Vanderperre in the California desert, expanding, as Fashion Network put it, on the designers' cinematic and romantic view of America. It was an outsider's love letter, a Belgian designer looking at the West the way Europeans look at it in films, and it lent western dressing a kind of intellectual credibility it still trades on.
That collection is a useful reminder that western style is a vocabulary and not a uniform. The best cowgirl winter outfits take a few words from it (dark denim, suede, a good belt, shearling at the collar) and put them into sentences that make sense in a January city. The single most sensible change is at the feet. Swap the pointed leather cowboy boot for a warm sheepskin one and the look stops being a costume and becomes something you can actually wear to the station.
The West, quietly, for autumn/winter 2026
This season's runways agree. The fashion magazine Faces listed "quiet western" among the key boot stories for autumn/winter 2026, naming Chloé, Celine, Jil Sander and Gabriela Hearst. Grazia's American edition went into detail: Celine showed a pared-back cowboy boot in "quiet neutral shades", Gabriela Hearst decorated hers with delicate embroidery, and Louis Vuitton and Marni slipped in subtler cues such as snip toes and Cuban heels.
The word that keeps coming up is quiet. Nobody serious is dressing as Annie Oakley this winter. The western reference has shrunk to a heel shape, a stitch line, a shade of tan, and that makes it far easier to bring into a normal wardrobe.
Then, in September, the reference crossed into cosy footwear. A report on Yahoo Shopping described UGG's "ranch-ready" reworking of its classic boots, with western motifs and a removable cow print skirt. Fleece and the frontier, officially on speaking terms.
Why sheepskin makes the look work
A cowboy boot is a riding boot. It has a slick leather sole designed to slide into a stirrup and a heel to stop it slipping through, and in a cold, wet city neither of those is your friend. A sheepskin boot does the opposite job. It is soft, wide, warm and low to the ground.
Visually, that softness is a gift. Western pieces are hard-edged by nature: stiff denim, tooled leather, brass and silver buckles, the sharp yoke of a shirt. Put a rounded, fleecy boot under all that and it takes the swagger down a notch, which is exactly what stops the outfit tipping into fancy dress. The look stays recognisably western but reads as relaxed rather than staged.
Five cowgirl winter outfits
The rancher, in town. Dark indigo straight jeans, a cream fisherman jumper, a tobacco suede jacket with a shearling collar, and chestnut or brown sheepskin boots. Thread a tooled leather belt with a small silver buckle through the jeans and leave the jumper untucked at the back, tucked at the front. This is the backbone outfit, and it works because every piece is something you'd wear separately.
Denim, doubled and warmed. A mid-blue straight jean with a darker indigo denim shirt, buttoned to the top, under a thick oatmeal cardigan and a long camel wool coat. The two denim shades stop it looking like a uniform, and the coat makes it a city look. Short boots keep the proportions relaxed.
Fringe, in moderation. A fringed suede jacket in tan, worn over a black ribbed rollneck and black straight jeans. Let the fringe be the only thing in motion and keep jewellery to a single pair of silver hoops. A colourful sheepskin boot here, bubblegum or lilac, pushes the look toward something psychedelic and festival-ish, which is a lovely place to be in the middle of winter.
Prairie in December. A long tiered cotton skirt in a small floral, thick black opaque tights, a cropped chunky knit and a cropped denim jacket with a borg collar. Tall sheepskin boots, with the skirt hem clearly covering their tops. This is the prettiest route into the look and borrows the romance that Gabriela Hearst's embroidered boots hinted at.
The office cowgirl. Dark jeans or straight black wool trousers, a crisp white poplin shirt, an oversized grey herringbone blazer and short sheepskin boots. A slim western belt is the only reference. It is Raf Simons's idea of Americana, translated for a Tuesday.
How to stay on the right side of costume
Count the references. Two is a look. Three is a strong look. A hat, a bandana, a fringed jacket, a bolo tie and a printed shirt together is a party.
Keep the fabrics natural. Suede, denim, wool, cord, leather and shearling all belong to this world; shiny synthetics and stretchy fast-fashion versions of western shirts tend to fight it.
Ground everything with one plain piece. A grey marl jumper or a black wool coat says you got dressed this morning rather than for an occasion.
And skip the cowboy hat. A wool beanie in a warm brown or a knitted headband is warmer, and nobody will think you're on your way to a line-dancing class.
A word on colour
Western dressing is mostly browns and tans, which is beautiful, but it is not the only option. A bright boot against brown suede and indigo denim is unexpected and very cheerful. Pink with tan is a particularly good pairing; so is sky blue with chocolate. That is the thinking behind the Sherpa boots at jelli.world, colourful snow boots in real sheepskin that sit happily under a suede jacket.

Common questions
Can you wear sheepskin boots with a western outfit?
Yes, and in winter they are the more sensible choice. Pair them with dark denim, suede and a leather belt, and keep the other western pieces to one or two so the softness of the boot can balance the look.
What jacket goes with cowgirl winter outfits?
A suede or denim jacket with a shearling or borg collar is the most natural fit. For colder days, wear a long wool coat over a western shirt and let the shirt's yoke show at the neck.
Are fringed jackets warm enough for winter?
Usually not on their own. Layer a heavy knit underneath, or keep the fringe to a scarf and wear a proper coat.
