The Bag Inside the Bag: The Orange Shopping Bag

Every good bag has a second bag folded inside it.

Every good bag has a second bag folded inside it. It is there for the bakery, the late market, the coat you take off when the sun comes out.

Ours is orange.

The Orange Shopping Bag is a nylon tote, 36 × 26 centimetres, with a single 56-centimetre strap drop so it sits on the shoulder. Silver mirror discs are scattered across it. They catch the light like sequins without being sequins.

It is light. It folds flat when empty. It goes inside a jelly bag, a Fluff bag or a coat pocket and you forget it's there until you need it.

Then it does a lot.

The market. Apples, bread, a bunch of flowers. Nylon wipes clean.

The gym. A towel and a pair of shoes, carried over the shoulder.

The weekend. A book, a jumper, a bottle of water. A bag for a day with no plan.

The office. Your lunch and your trainers, separate from your laptop.

The colour is the point. Orange is a strong, warm shade, and in grey winter streets it looks almost like a light switched on. The silver discs add sparkle on dark afternoons.

One rule: wear it with neutrals. Grey, navy, black, cream. Let it be the only bright thing.

It also pairs well with a jelly bag. Clear or frosted bags let a little orange show through when it is folded inside. On a pale jelly bag, it becomes a lining.

It is the kind of bag you stop noticing because it is always there, and then notice again every time someone asks where it came from.

It makes a good small present, too, tucked inside a bigger one.

Care is easy: wipe it with a damp cloth, shake it out and let it dry flat before folding it away.
