Caillebotte's Paris, with sturdier soles
Rainy day outfit ideas that start where the weather hits: hems, wool, proper soles, a shedding coat and a bag that shrugs off rain.

Strictly speaking, it isn't raining in Gustave Caillebotte's Paris Street; Rainy Day. The painting, made in 1877 and now at the Art Institute of Chicago, shows the moment after: cobbles slicked to a pewter sheen, umbrellas still up out of habit, a woman in a brown wool gown with velvet sleeves and fur trim, her skirt held just clear of the street. Critics at the time complained that there was no rain in it. They missed the point. It is the most elegant picture of wet weather ever made, and it is entirely about materials: wool that sheds water, silk stretched over steel, a hem carried at exactly the right height.
That is still the brief. The best rainy day outfit ideas begin with the parts the weather actually touches. A hem that clears the pavement, a shoe with a proper sole, an outer layer that sheds water, a bag that can be rained on without needing an apology. Settle those and everything in between can be as interesting as you like. Plenty of people are working this out right now: Pinterest's business community reported searches for "rainy fall outfits" up 100% in the week of 2 October.
Start at the hem
The floor-skimming wide trouser has had a long, lovely run, and in a London October it becomes a wick. Within one street the bottom four inches are dark and heavy, and they stay that way until lunch. Rain asks for a different line: trousers cut to the ankle bone, straight-leg jeans turned up once, or a skirt that ends either well above the boot or exactly at it. The gap of bare, wet shin between a midi hem and a short boot is the least flattering proportion in the wet-weather wardrobe. Close it with opaque tights or a taller boot.
Wool over cotton, always
Wool is a quietly miraculous fibre in drizzle. It holds a good deal of moisture before it feels wet, and it stays warm while it does. Cotton jersey gives up immediately and turns cold and clammy, and pale grey marl is the worst offender, recording every drop as a dark spot. So the knit under your coat should be merino, lambswool or a dense boiled wool, preferably in a colour with some conviction: tomato, cobalt, a deep moss.
Six rainy day outfit ideas for a wet autumn
The trench with a secret. A stone trench, belted, over a cobalt merino rollneck and charcoal wool trousers cut to the ankle. Black leather loafers on a rubber lug sole. Untie the belt indoors and the blue is a small reveal; outside, the trench does what trenches have always done.
Midi and the tall boot. A navy pleated wool skirt that finishes just over the top of a black knee-high rubber riding boot, with a chunky cream Aran and a waxed jacket. No gap, no splash line, and the proportion is pure Caillebotte: long, dark, decisive.
The shell, taken seriously. A technical hooded shell in a strong colour, olive or dark plum, over indigo straight jeans and a fine black rollneck. Black leather Chelsea boots with a commando sole. Choose a shell cut slim through the shoulder so it reads as tailoring and keeps its city manners.
Ink, head to foot. Navy wool coat, navy rollneck, navy flannel trousers with a crease. Navy is the most forgiving colour in the rain; it swallows splashes and looks sharper damp than dry. Then one hit of something glossy and loud on the arm, so the whole look has an opinion.
Knit dress, black tights. A rib-knit midi dress in chocolate brown, 80-denier black tights, black rubber-soled ankle boots and a long single-breasted coat. Tights are the unsung rain gear. They dry quickly and keep the wind off your legs.
Seattle, for New York. For a US fall day that might turn into a downpour, a slim hooded rain jacket over a heavy checked flannel shirt, dark jeans and duck boots. It translates well to a damp Sunday in Hackney, too.
Where the shine goes
Rain changes the light. Under a low sky every surface goes matte and flat, and the street turns into Caillebotte's palette of slate, tobacco and wet stone. In that light a single glossy object becomes the brightest thing in the picture. The question is where to put it.
Not on your feet. Patent shoes in the rain look anxious and scuff the moment they meet a kerb. Not on your coat either, unless the coat is the whole idea. The best place for gloss in wet weather is the bag, because it hangs outside every layer and catches whatever light there is. A jelly bag is made for this: the material is wipe-clean and shrugs off rain, and against a dark, damp coat a bright one shines like a sweet in its wrapper. At jelli.world the jelly totes and shoulder bags come in the kind of colours you'd usually save for July, which is precisely the point in October.
One position, firmly held: one gloss per outfit. A jelly bag with a PVC mac and patent boots is a hall of mirrors, and nothing reads.
What to leave at home
| Leave at home | Why | Wear instead |
|---|---|---|
| Suede boots | Marks at the first puddle, stiffens as it dries | Smooth leather on a rubber sole |
| Floor-length wide trousers | The hem soaks up the street | Ankle-length, or tucked into boots |
| Pale grey cotton jersey | Shows every drop | Navy, black or a strong colour in wool |
| Canvas or suede bags | Drinks water, goes limp | Jelly, coated nylon |
| Silk as the outer layer | Spots on contact | Silk under the coat, never over it |
UK drizzle, US downpour
British autumn rain is mostly persistent rather than dramatic: fine, sideways, all day. It rewards a hood and fabrics that cope with long, slow exposure. US fall rain, especially on the East Coast, tends to arrive in harder bursts. There a reliable closure on your bag, and a shoe that can stand in an inch of water at a crossing, matter more than an elegant collar.
Dry enough
The rain will win the argument about your hair. It needn't win the one about your outfit. If you'd like a bag that is happier in the weather than you are, the jelly collection at jelli.world is a good place to start.
Common questions
What should I wear on a rainy day if I don't own wellies?
Smooth leather Chelsea boots or loafers on a chunky rubber sole will handle most drizzle. Avoid suede and mesh trainers, which let water in fastest.
Is a trench coat waterproof?
Most are water-resistant rather than waterproof. A good one sheds light rain and drizzle on a commute, but in a proper downpour you'll want a hood.
What colour bag is best in the rain?
Any colour, as long as the material is wipe-clean. A bright one is genuinely useful: it lifts a dark coat and is easy to find under a café table.
