Sherpa vs sheepskin vs faux fleece

Sherpa is usually a synthetic fleece, most often polyester, made to look like the curly wool of a sheepskin; sheepskin is the real skin of a sheep with its wool still attached; and faux fleece is any synthetic pile that imitates it.

Sheepskin and shearlingThe real skin of a sheep with its wool still attached; shearling has the wool shorn short and evenNo
Faux fleeceAny synthetic pile knitted or woven into a fabric backing to imitate woolYes

How to tell them apart

Start with the material line on the label: real sheepskin says sheepskin or shearling, and a synthetic says polyester or another fibre. If you can see the base of the fleece, real sheepskin wool grows out of skin, while a synthetic fleece sits on a knitted or woven fabric backing.

What our sherpa boots are made of

jelli.world sherpa boots are short pull-on snow boots made from real sheepskin: a twin-face sheepskin upper, a real sheepskin lining and sock and a light EVA sole, in whole sizes UK 3–8 (EU 36–41), for £95 a pair. We call them sherpa boots for the look, but the material is real sheepskin, so they are not vegan.

Common questions

Is sherpa real sheepskin?

Usually not. “Sherpa” on a label normally means a synthetic fleece made to look like sheepskin. Check the material line: real sheepskin will say sheepskin or shearling.

What is the difference between sheepskin and shearling?

Both are real sheepskin with the wool still attached. Shearling is the name used for sheepskin whose wool has been shorn to an even, short length.

Are jelli.world sherpa boots real sheepskin?

Yes. They are real sheepskin inside and out: a twin-face sheepskin upper with a real sheepskin lining and sock. The fleece inside is real sheep fur, dyed. They are not vegan.

What is twin-face sheepskin?

A single piece of sheepskin used with both of its sides: the skin side, finished as suede, faces out, and the wool side faces in.
