how to style bag charms
The charm trend, done so it looks intentional — not cluttered.
Bag charms are having a proper moment. What started as a single plush trinket on a designer tote has turned into a whole language of personalisation — keyrings, ribbons, plush animals, tiny mirrors — and it's one of the easiest ways to make a bag feel like yours. Done well, a charm looks considered. Done carelessly, it looks like a keychain explosion. This guide is the difference between the two.
Why bag charms came back
Two things collided: a maximalist "more is more" mood in accessories, and a wave of collectible plush charms that made the look affordable and playful. The result is a trend that works on almost any bag — because a charm is small, reversible and personal. You're not committing to anything; you're just adding a little character.
1. Pick one hero
The single most useful rule: choose one charm to lead, and let anything else support it. One statement charm reads as intentional. Several similar-sized ones compete and start to look like clutter. Our own plush animal charms are designed as heroes — a long soft neck that wraps around a handle, no hard clip needed.
2. Place it off-centre
Hang a charm where the handle meets the bag, slightly off to one side, so it rests against the body rather than swinging free. Dead-centre looks accidental; off-centre looks styled. On a bucket bag, loop it around one handle base; on a baguette, hang it from the top zip pull or handle ring.
3. Layer by size, not by number
If you want the fuller, layered look, don't add more of the same — vary the scale. One large plush, one small trinket, one flat keyring gives the eye a clear order. Three medium charms of similar size read as a clump. Size contrast is what makes a maximalist arrangement look deliberate.
4. Match the charm to the bag
A translucent jelly bag already shows its colour and contents, so a charm with some density balances it nicely — a plush animal adds a soft focal point without fighting the transparency. Play with colour: a warm plush against a cool translucent bag, or a tonal charm on a nude bag for something quieter. See all the charms on the accessories page — add one to any bag for £9.99.
5. Mind the material
On a jelly bag specifically, prefer a lightweight plush or fabric charm you can wrap around the handle rather than a heavy metal one that clips on. Hard hardware can rub or scuff a soft surface over time; a soft charm won't. Cleaning and care notes for the bag itself are in jelly bag care.
