Why is my jelly bag sticky?

Can you fix a yellowed jelly bag?

The peroxide 'retrobright' methods used on old consoles are aggressive, can turn the finish chalky or uneven, and we don't recommend them on a bag you care about. 1. Sticky surface

Honest limit: it usually returns; the cause is inside the material. (TPU has no plasticisers to migrate — this failure mode simply doesn't apply.)

2. Yellowing

Cause: surface grime (fixable) or UV-driven chemical change in the plastic (mostly not). Fix: mild soap first — if it's grime, it lifts. Don't: peroxide "retrobright" tricks from the retro-console world; on a bag they easily leave the finish chalky and blotchy. 3. Scratches & scuffs

Fix: fine scuffs often buff down with a soft cloth and a trace of mild soap. Don't: magic erasers or cutting compounds — they trade one scratch for a fog of micro-scratches across the gloss. Honest limit: deep scratches are permanent. Dark opaque colours hide wear best — part of the case for black.

4. Plastic smell

New bag: off-gassing; air it open, out of sun, gone in days. Persistent smell in an old cheap bag: usually the PVC formulation itself — wipe, air, never store sealed, and accept it may not fully leave. Don't: perfume or deodorising sprays, which can react with the surface.

5. Stiffness & cracking

Cause: the endgame of plasticiser loss — old PVC goes hard, then cracks, usually at handles and fold points. Honest answer: there is no fix; softening sprays are temporary and greasy. If a vintage jelly has reached brittle, retire it to display duty. This is the strongest argument for starting with TPU, which keeps its flexibility.

Store out of direct sun and away from radiators.
