British romantic comedy saved its best moment for a downpour. At the end of Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell stand in torrential rain and she claims not to have noticed the weather, which, as Grazia observed, is quite a feat given how hard it's coming down. Hollywood got there first. Breakfast at Tiffany's ends in pouring rain, with Holly Golightly retrieving the cat she has just put out of a cab and kissing Paul in the wet. On screen, rain is shorthand for feeling too much to care about your hair.

In real life you will care about your hair, and your hem, and the walk from the bus stop. The best rainy date night outfits pair something you feel wonderful in, a slip skirt, a fine knit or a sharp trouser, with a long coat that protects it, a block-heeled or lug-sole boot and a small wipe-clean bag. You want to look good at the table, and to arrive there with the evening intact.

The rules of the walk

Dress for the journey as well as the room. The coat, the shoes and the bag are what face the weather, so choose them first and fit the outfit around them. A long coat that falls below the knee is the date-night shield: it covers a slip skirt entirely and keeps the worst off a trouser.

Fabrics that spot belong underneath. Satin and silk look beautiful by candlelight and record every raindrop if exposed. Stilettos and wet pavements are a poor combination, so take your height from a block heel or a sleek lug sole. And waterproof the face where it counts: mascara and brows first, then a long-wear lip.

Choose the coat first

On a wet night the coat is the outfit for the first and last ten minutes, and those are the minutes your date sees most clearly, under a streetlight, at the door. A belted trench in a dark colour, navy, black or a deep olive, is the most romantic option, because the belt gives the waist a line and the collar can be turned up against the rain with a little drama. If it's cold, a long wool coat with some water resistance is warmer and almost as chic; avoid anything pale, which shows every splash by the time you reach the bar. Whatever you choose, make sure it closes over the outfit completely. Half-protected satin is unprotected satin.

Rainy date night outfits, from drinks to a gallery

Slip skirt and a chunky knit. A bias-cut satin midi skirt in champagne or ink, a heavy cream jumper, black lug-sole ankle boots, and a long camel coat over the lot. By candlelight the gleam of satin against the bulk of the knit is irresistible, and the coat keeps the satin dry until it matters.

Black jeans, silk cami, blazer. For drinks. Black jeans hide splashes; a silk camisole in oxblood or chocolate under a black wool blazer gives the evening its texture; a dark trench goes over everything. Add a bold lip and a small, bright bag.

Rib-knit midi and knee boots. A fitted rib-knit dress in black or deep green, with knee-high leather boots that meet the hem. Warm, flattering and splash-proof below the knee, it's right for a pub dinner or a cinema date while the rain hammers the roof.

Cropped tailoring and loafers. Wide wool trousers cut just above the ankle clear the puddles. Chunky loafers on a rubber sole, a silky shirt and a structured coat finish it. Smart without tipping into formal.

A colourful co-ord for a gallery date. A late opening at a gallery or museum makes a perfect rainy date, and a knitted co-ord in emerald or cherry looks wonderful against white walls. Wear flat leather boots so you can walk the rooms for an hour.

The US fall version. A sweater dress, sheer black tights and lug-sole Chelsea boots under a water-resistant jacket will carry you from a dim bar in the West Village to a bookshop in Brooklyn.

The bag on the table

A date bag should be small, secure and very hard to ruin. It will sit on a damp bar stool, a wet table and the floor of a taxi. A jelly shoulder bag is a clever choice for exactly that reason: it's wipe-clean and shrugs off rain, so whatever the evening spills on it, a napkin sorts it out. It's also a talking point, because a glossy, colourful bag says something about you before the drinks arrive. jelli.world makes jelly shoulder bags and east-west bags with a Y2K playfulness that suits evening dressing, and the east-west shape tucks neatly under the arm beneath a long coat.

Inside: phone, card, keys, lipstick, a hair tie and blotting papers. A compact umbrella if it fits. If it doesn't, sharing one makes for a better walk home anyway.

Hair and make-up that survive

A sleek low bun, a slicked-back ponytail or a claw clip will see out the humidity. Save the bouncy blow-dry for a dry evening. Use waterproof mascara, a long-wear lip and a setting spray, and skip heavy powder, which turns patchy when damp.

Common questions

What should I wear on a rainy first date?

Something you feel confident in, under weather-friendly layers. Dark jeans or a knit dress, boots and a long coat is a reliable formula.

Can I wear a dress on a rainy date?

Yes. Choose a knit or jersey that won't spot, wear it with knee boots or opaque tights, and let a long coat handle the walk.

What shoes are best when it's raining?

Lug-sole or block-heel boots. They grip on wet pavements and still look polished.
