In praise of the see-through still life
What to put in a clear bag so it looks composed, not crammed: display pieces, a hidden pouch and clever colour tricks.

The modern clear bag began life as a security measure. In June 2013 the NFL told fans that, from that preseason, they could bring one clear bag into a stadium, no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, plus a clutch roughly "the size of a hand". It was a rule about suspicion: show us what you are carrying. More than a decade later, the stadium bag has become a fashion category of its own, with Inc. reporting this month that labels from Miu Miu to Telfar now make them.
Jellycore turns that idea inside out, making transparency a pleasure rather than a requirement. So what to put in a clear bag? A few good-looking pieces chosen to be seen, a pouch or a scarf in a colour that works with the bag, and everything practical and private zipped into one opaque case. The aim is a bag that looks composed from across the room and still carries your actual life.
The bag as a still life
The best way to think about a clear bag is as a small painting you carry. The Dutch had a word for the grandest kind: pronkstilleven, which the National Gallery translates as "ostentatious still life", and Willem Kalf, the leading Dutch still-life painter of the mid-17th century, was its master; the gallery singles out the "sheen and lustre on silver and glass" in his work. The point of a pronk painting was arrangement. A handful of beautiful objects, carefully placed, with the light doing the rest.
You need far fewer objects than Kalf did, but the principle holds. Edit hard, place things on purpose, and let the plastic catch the light.
Two zones, one rule
Divide everything you carry into two groups. The display zone holds the things that look good through plastic. The hidden zone holds everything else, inside one opaque pouch, placed at the back or the base where it is not the first thing anyone sees. The rule is that nothing crosses from the second group into the first. The moment a crumpled receipt is visible, the still life becomes a recycling bin.
What goes in the hidden pouch is as personal as a diary, but it should always include:
- cards, cash and anything with your address on it
- keys, which also scratch jelly when left loose
- medication, plasters and personal care items
- receipts, paperwork and pens, since ink can transfer onto the plastic
- chargers, cables and anything with a wrapper
What to put in a clear bag for show
The pouch that faces outwards does most of the work. Choose it the way you would choose a lining: a cherry-red pouch in a clear bag is graphic and punchy; a cream knitted one is quieter and very polished; a lilac pouch inside a butter-yellow bag makes both colours brighter. If you only buy one thing to style a clear bag, make it this.
A folded scarf is the second-best trick. Lay a silk square or a printed cotton one flat against an inside wall so its pattern presses up against the plastic. Stripes look crisp, florals look generous, and in autumn a small tartan or a wool check makes a summer bag feel instantly seasonal.
Then the jewellery of the interior. A tortoiseshell or leopard sunglasses case, which also protects the plastic from scratches. A good lipstick in a metal case, or a compact with a pretty lid. A paperback with a beautiful cover, chosen, it must be said, partly for its spine. If you carry a water bottle anyway, pick one in a colour that suits the bag, so it joins the arrangement instead of interrupting it.
Charms and keyrings sit on the outside, on a handle or a zip pull: a beaded phone strap, an enamel initial, a small fluffy pompom. One or two is personal; seven is a market stall.
Colour, filtered
A translucent bag is a colour filter, and what is inside changes the colour you see. A tinted bag adds its own hue to everything behind it, so a red pouch inside a yellow bag reads closer to orange, and a navy one inside pink drifts towards mauve. Test the effect in daylight before you leave the house. With a perfectly clear bag, the contents become the colour decision entirely, which is a gift on grey days: wear charcoal from neck to ankle, carry a clear bag with a tangerine glasses case and a striped scarf inside, and you have a colourful outfit without wearing a single colour.

Swaps for the seasons
Changing the contents is the cheapest way to refresh one bag through the year. In autumn, swap the summer sunglasses for a pair of leather gloves tucked in at the front, fingertips just showing, which is about the most elegant thing a see-through bag can hold. Add a tartan scarf and a book with a moody cover. In winter, a velvet pouch, a small tube of hand cream and a sparkly hair slide for parties. In spring, a pastel pouch and a floral square. In summer, sun cream in a good-looking tube and a striped towel rolled tight.
Privacy and care
A clear bag shows more than you might intend, so carry it as you would any bag in a crowd: in front of you, closed, with cards and phone in the hidden pouch rather than on display. If you would rather keep more to yourself, a tinted or frosted jelly bag gives you the gloss without full transparency.
The inside needs looking after too, because pens, make-up and dye from coloured items can mark the plastic. Wipe the interior regularly with a soft cloth and barely soapy water, and keep anything inky zipped away. Our guide on how to clean a jelly bag goes into more detail.
Make it yours
A clear bag is a small stage for the things you love. If you would like a new one, jelli.world makes jelly totes, shoulder bags and east-west bags that look even better with a little curation.
Common questions
What should I put in a clear bag every day?
Choose two or three things to display, such as a coloured pouch, a folded scarf and a good sunglasses case, and keep cards, keys, receipts and personal items inside one opaque pouch at the back of the bag.
How do you make a clear bag look nice?
Limit what is visible. One statement pouch in a contrasting or tonal colour, one flat patterned item against the side wall, and a charm on the handle are usually enough. If it looks crowded, take something out.
How do I keep a clear bag private?
Use an opaque pouch for valuables and anything personal, keep paperwork in a folder, or choose a tinted or frosted jelly bag, which shows contents only as soft shapes.
