This winter belongs to scarlet
What to wear in winter 2026, read off the runways: scarlet, snowy leopard, jacquard coats, relaxed suits and faux fur, worn for real life.

There is a particular red that only works in winter. It needs a white sky behind it, or a dark street, or a mouthful of cold air, and it needs to arrive on a coat or a glove at the exact moment everyone else has given up and put on charcoal. This season the runways handed that red back to us, and they surrounded it with leopard that has gone pale as frost, coats woven like upholstery and suits cut loose enough to wear over a jumper.
So, what to wear in winter 2026? Start with the coat, because it is the outfit for four months. Make it either a jacquard with some swagger or a dark, near-black wool, then add one hit of scarlet, one piece of snowy leopard or faux fur, and a suit that fits over knitwear. Everything below is sorted by what showed in February and March, and how to wear it on a Tuesday in January.
The colour story is darker than you think, and redder
Who What Wear UK's colour report for autumn/winter 2026 reads like a box of expensive inks: midnight (Ferragamo, Gucci, Burberry, Victoria Beckham), plum (Miu Miu, Hermès), carbon (Prada, Bottega Veneta, Sportmax), moss (Fendi, Emporio Armani). Four very grown-up darks. Then, at the end, scarlet, credited to Chanel and Chloé.
That last one is the colour to buy into. The darks are lovely, but most of us already own something navy and something grey, and a new midnight jumper changes very little. Scarlet changes the whole outfit. It is also the most forgiving bright there is, because it sits naturally with every one of those darks. Scarlet and midnight is nautical and crisp. Scarlet and carbon is a little severe, very Parisian. Scarlet and moss is a Christmas card you can wear in February.
Pantone, meanwhile, chose Cloud Dancer, a "billowy, balanced white", as its colour of 2026. Take it as permission for a winter white coat or a cream rollneck, and then put the red right next to it. White and red on a frozen morning is about as good as dressing gets.
Coats with an opinion
InStyle's round-up of 20 fall 2026 trends opened with "jazzy jacquards" at Michael Kors, Dior and Giorgio Armani: patterned, heavy, almost brocade outerwear. A jacquard coat looks fussy on a hanger and magnificent on a body in motion, because the weave catches light differently as the fabric folds. Keep everything under it plain. A black rollneck, black wide trousers, a dark boot. The coat is the print, the colour and the statement, so let it work alone.
The same list noted "set sail" details at Etro, Ferragamo and Dries Van Noten: pea coats and sailor collars in good fabric. If you already own a navy pea coat, this is your cheapest win of the season. Wear it with a scarlet knit and cream trousers and you have the colour report in three garments.
And there were the "grandma (faux) furs": belted, buttoned-up faux-fur coats with a vintage air. The Impression's fall 2026 fur report counted fur, real and faux, across Valentino, Balenciaga, Etro, Givenchy and many more, and noted shearling being used as an alternative. My advice is to wear the faux-fur coat as if it were a cardigan, not a cocktail coat: over jeans, flat boots, hair undone. Glamour worn casually is the whole point.
Leopard, but snowed on
The most wearable print of the season is what InStyle called "snowy leopards", cooler-toned leopard in faux fur at Bottega Veneta, Carolina Herrera and Tom Ford. Classic leopard is warm, all caramel and toffee. The icy version, cream and grey with a soft charcoal spot, is calmer and goes with far more of your wardrobe, especially carbon and midnight.
A snowy leopard collar, hat or bag is enough. If you go for the coat, wear it with grey: a grey marl jumper, grey flannel trousers, grey suede boots. The print will look like frost on a window.
Suits that fit over a jumper
"Fashion finance", as InStyle termed it, was roomy '90s suiting at Boss, Emporio Armani and Givenchy by Sarah Burton. In practical terms it is the most useful winter trend on the list, because a relaxed jacket goes over a chunky knit and a loose trouser leaves room for thermal tights underneath. Wear a carbon suit with a scarlet crewneck and a pair of brown suede boots in the cognac shades Marie Claire spotted at Chloé, Dior and TWP. It is office-proof and still unmistakably this season.
The season at a glance
| Trend | Where it showed | Wear it like this |
|---|---|---|
| Scarlet | Chanel, Chloé | A coat, a knit or gloves against midnight or carbon |
| Jacquard coats | Michael Kors, Dior, Giorgio Armani | Over plain black, nothing else patterned |
| Snowy leopard | Bottega Veneta, Carolina Herrera, Tom Ford | A collar, hat or bag with grey and cream |
| Relaxed suiting | Boss, Emporio Armani, Givenchy | Loose enough for a jumper underneath |
| Pea coats, sailor collars | Etro, Ferragamo, Dries Van Noten | Navy coat, scarlet knit, cream trousers |
| Faux-fur coats | Many collections | Worn down, with jeans and flat boots |
Where the colour goes when the coat is dark
If your coat is midnight or carbon (and in most wardrobes it is), the colour has to live at the edges. Gloves, first. InStyle singled out "cherry on top" gloves at Anna Sui: bright or patterned gloves as the accessory. A pair in scarlet does more for a black coat than any amount of jewellery, because hands move and the eye follows them.
Then the bag. A dark coat is the best possible frame for something glossy and bright, and a jelly bag, wipe-clean and unbothered by sleet, is the obvious winter candidate. jelli.world's jelly totes and shoulder bags come in the kinds of colours a January street badly needs. For softer days, a fluffy bag picks up the season's fur story without the commitment of a fur coat.
Last, the feet. If it snows, colourful sheepskin boots worn with dark leggings and a long coat are cheerful and make perfect sense in cold weather. Keep them as the only bright below the waist.
One red thing
Buy the coat if you need it. Otherwise, find one scarlet or sugared colour to carry through the dark, and jelli.world has bags in plenty of them.
Common questions
What colours are in for winter 2026?
Runway reports point to deep darks (midnight, plum, carbon and moss) plus one bright: scarlet, at Chanel and Chloé. Pantone's colour of the year is Cloud Dancer, a soft white, which pairs beautifully with red.
What is the key coat for winter 2026?
Either a patterned jacquard coat, as seen at Michael Kors, Dior and Giorgio Armani, or a navy pea coat in the nautical mood of Etro and Ferragamo. Faux-fur coats, belted and buttoned like a grandmother's, are the softer option.
How do I wear winter 2026 trends without buying a new wardrobe?
Change the accessories. Scarlet gloves, a snowy leopard hat or a bright bag will update a coat you already own more than a new jumper in a colour you already have.
