Nobody sees your clothes in January
Winter 2026 trends to try that work with the coat you already own: fuzzy bags, open bags, cognac and cream boots, bright tights and gloves.

Nobody sees your clothes in January. They see a coat, buttoned to the chin, and whatever sticks out of it: a hand, a bag, two boots, an ankle in a stocking, the top of a hat. Winter dressing in a city is mostly accessory dressing, which is why the most useful reading of the autumn/winter 2026 shows starts at the edges and works inwards.
The winter 2026 trends to try are the ones you can wear over or under a coat you already own: a fuzzy bag, a bag carried open, a boot in cognac suede or cream, tights in a colour with some nerve, and gloves that are not black. None of them requires a new wardrobe. All of them showed on serious runways.
Fuzz, everywhere you can hold it
Who What Wear's Charlie Teather filed this under "Make a Fuzz", with fluffy bags at Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Simone Rocha and Fendi, and the runways demanding "no scrimping on the fluff". PurseBlog's fall 2026 runway handbag report found fur accents on bags at Fendi, Chanel, Chloé, Miu Miu, Loewe, Bottega Veneta, Givenchy and Stella McCartney, and at Miu Miu the new 1970s-ish saddle bag came in faux fur as well as smooth leather.
A fluffy bag is the easiest way into the season's fur mood, and it works better than a fur coat for most people because it keeps the volume off the body. The trick is contrast. Fuzz looks richest against something flat and dense: a smooth wool coat, a leather trouser, a poplin collar. Put a fluffy bag against a fluffy jumper and the two cancel each other out. Who What Wear noted Fendi for something "fun and colourful" and Bottega for monochrome, and both are right. A pale pink or lilac fluffy bag against midnight wool is sweet in the best way; a black one against black is more serious and very chic. jelli.world's fluffy bags lean towards the former.
The Impression's fur report also named the fur wrap as "the fur accessory to watch", replacing last year's stole. Wear one knotted at the neck of a camel coat, like a big soft scarf, and leave the coat open.
The bag, carried open
Both PurseBlog ("Coming Undone") and Who What Wear ("The Great Unzipped") picked out bags worn open and slouching at Chanel, Balenciaga, Fendi, Loewe and others. It is a gesture more than a product. A bag carried open, under the arm or in the crook of the elbow, looks lived in and slightly hurried, as though you have somewhere better to be.
In winter there is a practical problem: rain gets in. This is where a jelly tote earns its keep. The material is wipe-clean and shrugs off rain, so a splash into an open top is less of a disaster than it would be in suede. Keep a zipped pouch inside for anything that should stay dry, and let the rest look casually tumbled.
Boots, in four directions
Marie Claire's fall 2026 boot report lists skin-tight boots (Chanel, Altuzarra, Miu Miu), cowboy boots (Chloé, Celine, Gabriela Hearst), printed boots, brown suede in cognac and copper rather than chocolate (Chloé, Dior, TWP) and slouchy boots (Balenciaga, Ganni, Stella McCartney). Grazia added white boots at Chanel, Prada and Courrèges, and chunky soles at Prada and Miu Miu.
If you buy one pair, buy the cognac suede. It is warmer than black, kinder to every coat colour and more interesting than chocolate, and it looks particularly good against grey flannel and moss. The cream boot is the brave option and a lovely one: worn with a winter white coat it turns an outfit into a single pale column, and it is very much in step with Pantone's choice of Cloud Dancer as its colour of 2026.
For snow, none of the above is ideal. That is the moment for sheepskin. Colourful sheepskin boots, like jelli.world's real-sheepskin Sherpa boots, take the season's appetite for fuzz and colour to the ground floor. Wear them with slim dark trousers or leggings so the boot keeps its shape as the focal point.
Colour on the legs
This is the most cheerful idea of the season and the cheapest. W magazine's fall 2026 accessories report called it "Stocking Stuffers": pea green stockings at Moschino, nature-print wool socks at Dries Van Noten, burnt-orange socks at Marni. Coloured tights turn a black skirt and black coat into a proper outfit, and in winter, when legs see no sun at all, a dose of colour from the knee down is a gift.
Choose opaque over sheer for colour, and match the depth of the tights to the depth of the outfit. Pea green with a charcoal skirt and cognac boots. Burnt orange with navy. Plum with carbon. The shoe should be darker than the tights, so the colour reads as deliberate rather than costume.
Hands and heads
InStyle's fall 2026 trend round-up pointed to bright or patterned gloves at Anna Sui. A coloured glove against a dark coat is the single most visible accessory in winter: hands move, wave, hold coffee, hail taxis. Choose a colour that disagrees nicely with your coat. Scarlet on navy, mint on plum, tangerine on grey.
Up top, W noted knit beanies at Chloé and Bottega Veneta. A ribbed beanie in a clear colour is the antidote to a serious coat. Pull it low, just above the brows, and keep the scarf dark so the hat does the talking.

Common questions
What accessory trends are big for winter 2026?
Fuzzy and fur-trimmed bags, bags carried open, clutches and minaudières for evening, cognac suede and cream boots, coloured tights and socks, and bright gloves all featured in runway reports from PurseBlog, W, Marie Claire and Who What Wear.
Which winter 2026 trend is easiest to try?
Coloured tights or gloves. They cost little, work with what you own and change the look of a dark coat immediately.
Are fluffy bags practical in winter?
On dry days, yes, and they look best against smooth fabrics. In heavy rain, swap to a wipe-clean jelly bag and save the fluff for the evening.
