More is more again this autumn
What to wear fall 2026, straight off the runways: jacquard coats, roomy tailoring, fringe, gold and open bags, and how to wear them for real.

Matthieu Blazy closed his autumn/winter 2026 show for Chanel at the Grand Palais with metallic handbags and matching hair, to Lady Gaga's "Just Dance". The Zoe Report summed up the whole collection in three words: "More is more." Blazy had turned up the colour, covered pastel plaids in sequins and cinched pleated dresses with red leather belts. After several seasons of beige restraint, the most famous house in Paris told everyone to put the volume back on.
That is the mood to dress in. If you want the short answer to what to wear fall 2026, it is this: roomy tailoring, a coat with a pattern woven into it, one thing that moves (fringe, fur, a scarf), a touch of gold and a bag carried open in the hand. The rest of this guide explains which runway ideas survive contact with a bus queue, and how to wear them so they look chosen rather than copied.
The coat is a tapestry now
InStyle's fashion month round-up put "jazzy jacquards" at the top of its list, with Michael Kors, Dior and Giorgio Armani showing woven patterns that were "bold, bright, and a bit daring". By September, Who What Wear was predicting that brocade, jacquard, tapestry and embroidered jackets would be everywhere because they "ooze opulence".
The trick is to let the jacket be the only pattern in the room. A jacquard cropped jacket in rust, teal and gold over a plain chocolate rollneck and straight dark denim looks rich. The same jacket with a printed scarf looks like a soft-furnishings department. Woven pattern has depth that print lacks, because the colour sits in the thread and catches light at an angle, so give it plain, matte company and let it shimmer.
Tailoring with room to breathe
The same InStyle report called it "fashion finance": relaxed, roomy suiting with a 1990s feel at Boss, Emporio Armani and Givenchy under Sarah Burton. Alongside it ran "tie it up", with Givenchy and Jean Paul Gaultier putting neckties on women as a feminine statement. Haider Ackermann's Tom Ford went closer to the body, with tailoring that FashionUnited described as the backbone of the collection, dense wools and pinstripes worn low on the hip.
My position: buy the trousers a size easier than you think and the jacket with a shoulder that sits just past your own. Roomy only works if it is deliberate. Then do the tie in a colour that has no business being there. A grey chalk-stripe suit, a pale blue shirt and a skinny tie in cherry red is a far better proposition than the tie that matches the suit. Finish with a polished brown loafer and let the trouser break softly over it.
Something that moves
Fringe was the season's party trick. InStyle spotted "cartoonish fringe" at Chanel, Loewe and Rick Owens and admitted it looked "a little muppet-y", which is exactly its charm. At Bottega Veneta, Louise Trotter's second collection featured an oversized peach jacket in shiny, silky fringe, part of what one review called a spectrum of softness with fuzzy wool, curly shearling and brushed, braided silk.
Fur moved too, almost all of it faux. PurseBlog called fur one of the biggest trends of the entire season, and InStyle's "snowy leopards" at Bottega Veneta, Carolina Herrera and Tom Ford swapped cheetah for the paler, smokier coat of the snow leopard. Wear one moving thing per outfit. A fringed skirt wants a fine-gauge knit above it; a faux-fur coat wants a clean column underneath. When two textures both shake, neither reads.
Gold, worn like you mean it
InStyle's "golden age" pointed to 1980s gold lamé and shapes at Gucci, Ferragamo and Mugler, while "OTT opulence" gathered the oversized gold jewellery at Saint Laurent, Celine and Chanel. W Magazine's accessories report found the same appetite for stacking earrings and heavy necklaces together.
The grown-up way to do this is daytime gold. A gold lamé skirt on a Tuesday, with a navy crewneck and flat black boots, is more interesting than a gold dress at a party, where everyone expects it. Big gold earrings with a white shirt and nothing else is another good version. Keep the metal warm and the rest plain.
Bags, carried open
The accessory story was about attitude as much as objects. PurseBlog noted that "the cool-girl way to carry a bag is, apparently, open", with Chanel models carrying Classic Flaps unfastened and Fendi, Loewe and Louis Vuitton showing slouchier carries. W Magazine tracked the return of the minaudière at Dior, Gucci and Loewe, and clutches with hidden details everywhere else.
What this means off the runway: hold your bag. A small top-handle carried low in the hand reads as considered in a way a crossbody cannot. It is also where a colourful jelly bag earns its place in a dark wardrobe. A jelli.world jelly bag in red or orange, carried against a charcoal coat, picks up streetlight and rain, and wipes clean afterwards.

Boots and the ground beneath
Grazia's fall boot report named four directions: animal print, cowboy, chunky and white. Prada's Monolith Chelsea and Miu Miu's bubble-soled knee-highs, borrowed from its 1999 archive, gave chunky its sense of humour, while Chanel and Prada made white boots look new. Marie Claire added skin-tight boots at Chanel, Altuzarra and Miu Miu, cut to go under knit dresses.
For the cold end of the season, a colourful sheepskin boot does the white-boot job with more warmth and better grip on wet leaves. jelli.world's Sherpa boots, real sheepskin in pink, mint or yellow, worn with a cream knit dress and thick ribbed tights, is the weekend version of everything above.
The bright bit
Every look here works better with one note of colour you chose on purpose. If yours is a bag, jelli.world has jelly and fluffy bags in shades that hold their own against a dark coat.
Common questions
What is the biggest fall 2026 trend?
If one idea links the shows, it is a return to richness: woven jacquards, gold, fringe and faux fur, after several seasons of minimal neutrals. Chanel's "more is more" collection is the clearest single example.
How do I wear fall 2026 trends without buying everything new?
Pick one statement per outfit and build the rest from what you own. A single jacquard jacket, a fringed skirt or a gold piece will update a wardrobe of plain knits, dark denim and good boots.
What colours should I wear for autumn 2026?
Deep bases did well on the runways, with midnight, plum, moss and carbon among the shades Who What Wear flagged, plus scarlet at Chanel and Chloé. Our full guide to fall 2026 colour trends goes shade by shade.
