are jelly bags waterproof?
The honest answer — water-resistant, not a sealed dry bag.
It's one of the most common questions about jelly bags, and the honest answer has two halves. The material is water-resistant to waterproof — it doesn't absorb water at all. The bag is highly water-resistant but not a sealed dry bag, because water can still get in through the opening. Here's what that means in practice.
The material: TPU and PVC don't absorb water
Both TPU and PVC are non-porous plastics. Unlike leather (which stains and warps) or fabric (which soaks), water beads off the surface and wipes away with a damp cloth. Rain, sea spray and pool splashes do nothing to the material itself — this is the single biggest practical advantage of a jelly bag.
Water-resistant vs waterproof — the honest distinction
Water-resistant means the material repels water and won't be damaged by it — true here. Waterproof, strictly, means water can't get in even submerged, which needs sealed seams and a sealed closure like a roll-top dry bag. A jelly bag has an open top, a zip or a flap, so it's water-resistant: it shrugs off rain and splashes, but it isn't built to keep contents dry underwater. Don't drop your phone in it and go swimming.
In the rain
Ideal. A sudden downpour that would spot a suede bag or soak a canvas tote does nothing here — wipe it down when you get in and it's as new. Water can run in through the top opening in heavy rain, so if it's really coming down, close it or hold it under your coat like any bag.
At the beach and pool
Home turf. Sand brushes off, splashes wipe away, and there's nothing to ruin. The one rule is sun, not water: prolonged direct UV can yellow a clear finish over time, so keep a translucent bag in the shade of your towel between dips. Full beach and holiday styling is in how to style a jelly bag in summer.
Keeping the inside dry
If you're carrying something that must stay dry — a phone, a camera — pop it in a small zip pouch inside the bag. That gives you the material's water resistance on the outside plus a sealed layer on the inside, which is all most people need for a rainy day or a day by the water.
