beach holiday packing list
Seven days, one case — organised around bags rather than outfits.
Most packing lists are outfit lists, which is why they overpack. Pack around bags instead: one case, one day bag, one dry pouch. Decide those three and the clothes sort themselves out.
The seven-day capsule
- 3 swimsuits. Two is one short — something is always drying.
- 4–5 day pieces. Linen, cotton, anything that survives being sat on wet.
- 2 evening options. One dressy, one that works with sandals.
- 1 cover-up that can walk through a hotel lobby.
- 2 pairs of shoes. Sandals you can walk a mile in, plus one for dinner. Flip-flops on your feet.
- 1 light layer. Air conditioning and sea breeze, every trip, without fail.
The day-bag decision
This is the choice that decides whether you pack two bags or four. The default is a beach bag for the sand, a tote for town, and something small for dinner — three bags, because the beach one is fabric and never recovers from day one.
One bag can do all three if it is wipe-clean and structured: sand brushes off, chlorine and sun cream rinse away, and it looks deliberate at eight in the evening rather than damp. Toiletries, edited
- SPF 30+ in full size. The one thing worth the weight — resort prices are punishing and you will use more than you think.
- After-sun. Nobody packs it. Everybody needs it by day two.
- Everything else in decants — a week needs less than you pack.
- Painkillers, plasters, antihistamine. Pharmacies close at siesta.
- A hairbrush and three spare hair ties. They vanish.
The things nobody remembers
- A plug adapter with USB ports — one adapter, two phones
- A dry pouch for phone, cards and passport
- A foldable tote for the things you buy and cannot fit on the way home
- Coins for lockers and sunbeds
- A book that is not a screen in direct glare
- A laundry bag — or a bag whose inside you can simply wipe out
What to leave at home
Straw bags (here is why), anything leather that will meet salt water, more than two pairs of shoes, the third dress you packed for a night out that will not happen, and hair tools the hotel already has. Every one of them is weight you carry twice.
Packing day, in order
- Shoes first, along the hinge, stuffed with socks and chargers
- Heavy fabrics flat, light ones rolled on top
- Toiletries in a sealed pouch, never against clothes
- Swimwear last, at the top — first thing out, first thing needed
- Day bag carried, not packed: it is your personal item on the flight
