pool bag essentials
The list, the chlorine problem, and why a pool bag is not a beach bag.
A pool day looks like an easier version of a beach day. It is a different problem: less sand, more chlorine, wet tiles everywhere, and a bag that spends the afternoon standing in the puddle under a lounger.
The pool list
- Towel — hotel ones run out by ten in the morning
- Spare swimwear, so the wet set can come off
- SPF 30+ and after-sun (reflection off water burns faster)
- Sunglasses and a hair tie
- Water bottle — chlorine and sun dehydrate you quietly
- Dry pouch: phone, cards, room key
- Flip-flops for hot tiles and the walk back
- Cover-up for the lobby
- Book or headphones
- Coin or card for the locker
- Goggles, if you plan to actually swim
The chlorine problem
Chlorine is harder on bags than sea water, and it works slowly enough that people do not connect the damage to the cause. It bleaches cotton and canvas a shade lighter across a season, dries leather until it cracks at the fold, and settles into woven fibres as a smell that survives washing.
Sun cream is the other half. Oil-based SPF leaves dark patches on canvas and straw within one application, and the higher the factor the heavier the oil. On a smooth shell both problems are the same problem, solved the same way: a damp cloth, ten seconds.
Wet swimwear, solved
The usual arrangement is a plastic carrier bag inside a fabric tote — which works, rustles, and eventually leaks. If the bag itself is non-absorbent the whole layer disappears: wet swimwear rides loose, nothing soaks through to your book, and you wipe the inside out when you get back to the room.

Pool bag vs beach bag
- Size. A pool bag travels from a room to a lounger, not across a car park and a dune. It can be smaller — but it still has to take a towel, and that is the real floor.
- The base. Poolside means standing water. A fabric base wicks it upward into everything; a structured plastic base stands in it and does not care.
- Openness. On the sand you want a shape that shakes out. At the pool you want to find the room key without standing up — a translucent shell earns its keep here.
- Evening. A hotel pool bag walks through a lobby twice a day. A rinse-and-go bag can go straight to dinner; a damp canvas one cannot.
