Why is my straw bag shedding?

Shedding is dried fibres snapping — natural straw and raffia lose moisture with sun and age, turn brittle, and break at flex points. Slow it by keeping the bag out of prolonged direct sun, storing it stuffed with paper so the weave holds shape, and occasionally misting raffia very lightly with water. You can slow shedding; you can't stop it — it's what dried plant fibre does.

Can a straw bag be repaired?

Loose ends can be tucked and glued (clear fabric glue, applied from inside), unravelling edges can be bound with ribbon, and a snapped handle can sometimes be re-wrapped with leather cord. These are honest patch jobs, not restorations — woven fibre can't be rewoven invisibly. If the base or handle anchors have failed, it's usually the end.

What's a good alternative to a straw beach bag?

If you love straw's look, buy straw and baby it — it photographs beautifully. If what you actually need is beach FUNCTION, the honest alternative is a smooth non-absorbent shell like TPU: sand pours out instead of embedding in the weave, splashes bead off, sun cream wipes away, and there are no fibres to dry out and snap. Snapped handles. The whole bag's weight through the weakest weave. Helps: carry by the body when loaded; re-wrap failing handles with leather cord early, not after.
Trapped sand. The weave is a sand archive — every beach day deposits a layer that grinds the fibres from inside. Helps: shake hard, vacuum on low with a sock over the nozzle. Truth: some of it lives there now.
Snags. One loose end + one zip = a pulled loop you'll see forever. Helps: tuck and dab with clear fabric glue from inside; bind unravelling rims with ribbon.
Mould. Natural fibre + damp swimsuit + car boot = spots by morning. Helps: never store damp, ever; sun-dry briefly after wet days (the one time sun helps).

The honest fork in the road

If you love straw for its look — the texture, the Riviera of it — keep it, care for it, and give it the easy days. It photographs like nothing else.
