At Prada in February, inside the pink and white walls of the Fondazione Prada, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons opened their autumn/winter 2026 show with cosy knits and multicoloured scarves, then tore them open. Beneath were shirts with exaggerated pink cuffs, a pink satin dress ripped at the bodice to show black, and a short yellow waterproof cape over a coat. FashionUnited reported the designers' own phrase for it: mutations from within, visible to the exterior.
It is the best metaphor I know for this season's colour. The fall 2026 colour trends are dark on the outside and bright underneath. Midnight, plum, moss and carbon do the heavy lifting as coats and suits; scarlet, royal purple, peach and yellow flash at the cuffs, the hem, the bag and the tights. Read the palette that way and it becomes very easy to wear.
The dark foundations
Who What Wear's Brittany Davy named the season's five key colours in August. Four of them are deep. Midnight, "arguably the closest shade to black", came through at Ferragamo, Gucci, Burberry and Victoria Beckham. Plum appeared at Miu Miu and Hermès; carbon grey at Prada, Bottega Veneta and Sportmax; muted moss green at Fendi and Emporio Armani.
None of these is a statement on its own, and that is their value. Each one is a black alternative with a temperature. Midnight is cooler and kinder to pale skin by a window in December. Plum is warmer and flatters almost everyone at the face. Carbon makes any colour beside it look cleaner. Moss is the one to wear with brown, because the two share a root in earth. If you are buying one coat this year, pick from these four and the rest of the palette will hang off it.
The heat: scarlet and royal purple
The fifth colour on Davy's list is the season's loudest. "Scarlet red is back for yet another season," she wrote, crediting Chanel and Chloé. At Chanel, Blazy's version was mostly in details: red leather belts cinching pleated, drop-waisted dresses, per The Zoe Report. At Tom Ford, the red was lipstick against a restrained palette.
That tells you how to wear it. Red is most powerful in small, hard shapes: a belt, a lip, a glove, a bag. A scarlet leather belt over a carbon knit dress does more than a red coat would, because the eye goes straight to the waist and stays there.
Royal purple arrived from the street rather than the catwalk. "The internet can't get enough of royal purple sweaters," Who What Wear's Nikki Chwatt wrote in her autumn shopping predictions. Purple sits beside plum on the colour wheel, so a royal purple jumper under a plum coat is a tonal look with a pulse. Under midnight navy it looks almost electric.
The soft surprise: peach, pink and yellow
The prettiest colour moment of the season was at Bottega Veneta, where Louise Trotter sent out an oversized peach jacket in shiny, silky fringe among grey wool trenches and cream midi-skirts, as one review described. Peach against grey is a lesson in itself. The grey cools the peach down so it reads sophisticated rather than sugary.
Prada's pink and yellow work the same way. Pink cuffs under a black jacket. A yellow cape over a darker coat. These are colours that look fresh precisely because they are framed by something serious. Who What Wear's Harriet Davey also predicted that aqua would stay popular into the new season, and it belongs in this group: a pale, watery brightness that looks wonderful against charcoal.
Then there are the legs. W Magazine noticed colourful tights and socks at Moschino, Dries Van Noten and Marni, including "pea green stockings". It is the cheapest way to wear a trend colour, and one of the most charming. Pea green tights with a midnight skirt and black loafers is a look an art teacher would envy.
Warm metals and leather browns
Not every trend colour is a dye. InStyle's fashion month round-up tracked 1980s gold lamé at Gucci, Ferragamo and Mugler. Tom Ford used cognac for warmth and depth, and Marie Claire found brown suede boots at Chloé, Dior and TWP leaning towards cognac and copper more than chocolate.
Cognac and copper are the colours to put next to moss and plum. Gold works best with midnight, where its warmth lifts the cold blue.
White, the quiet trend
Pantone named Cloud Dancer, a "billowy, balanced white", as its Colour of the Year 2026, announced last December. The runway agreed in its own way: Grazia counted white boots at Chanel and Prada, with Toteme and Celine leaning into creamy shades. A winter white is a brave and lovely thing in a grey city. Wear it from the knee down, or as a single cream knit under a dark coat, and keep it clean.

Where a bag comes in
The bright half of this palette is naturally an accessory story, so let your bag carry it. A jelly bag in red or turquoise is pure colour with a gloss on top, and against a matte carbon or midnight coat it does exactly what Prada's pink cuffs did. If you would rather add softness than shine, a fluffy bag in deep red or purple brings Bottega's tactile mood with it. Both live at jelli.world.
Choose your bright
Pick your dark, then pick the one colour you would like to see on a wet afternoon. If that colour is a bag, jelli.world will have it in jelly or fluff.
Common questions
What is the colour of fall 2026?
There is no single shade. The runway reports point to deep bases (midnight, plum, carbon and moss) with scarlet as the leading bright, while Pantone's Colour of the Year 2026 is a white, Cloud Dancer.
Is brown still in for autumn 2026?
Yes, in warmer forms. Cognac and copper suede appeared at Chloé and Dior, and Tom Ford used cognac across its tailoring. Pair brown with moss or plum rather than black.
How do I wear a bright trend colour if I mostly wear black?
Swap black for midnight or carbon first, then add the colour in a small, hard shape: a belt, gloves, tights or a bag. A dark base makes a bright look deliberate.
