Ten degrees is the most dishonest temperature
What to wear in 10 degrees weather (50°F): a three-layer system for the chilly-then-warm British day that still lets your colour show through.

Ten degrees is the most dishonest temperature in the British calendar. At 8am, waiting on a platform, it feels like winter. By lunchtime, walking briskly in a patch of sun, you want to take everything off. By four, with the light going, you want it all back. Ten degrees has to be negotiated with, hour by hour.
It is also very common. At Kew Gardens, the Met Office's 1991–2020 averages give a typical November daytime high of 11.6°C (about 53°F) and an October overnight low of 7.8°C (46°F), as the Climate of London tables show. That puts 10°C, or 50°F, squarely in the middle of a London autumn. So here is what to wear in 10 degrees weather: three thin-to-medium layers that each come off on their own, a wool layer closest to the skin, a coat you can open, and a bright note placed where it will still show when everything is buttoned.
Why three layers, and which three
The mistake at ten degrees is the single heavy thing. A big padded coat over a T-shirt is too hot on the move and leaves you with nothing to wear when you take it off indoors. A rollneck under a light jacket is too cold standing still. You want a system, and the system has three parts.
The first is a fine knit or base close to the body. Make it wool if you can. The Woolmark Company, the wool industry's body, says wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture before it feels wet, and that synthetics can chill you far more than wool when you stop moving after exertion. Treat the exact figures as the industry's own, but anyone who has sat down on a train after a fast walk in a polyester top knows the clammy feeling it describes. A merino crewneck or a fine-gauge rollneck is the right start.
The second layer is your mid-weight: a cardigan, an overshirt, a quilted gilet or a soft tailored jacket. This is the layer that stays on in the office and the café, so it is the one to make interesting. The third is the coat, and at ten degrees it should be unlined or lightly lined wool, a trench, or a mid-weight jacket with a funnel neck. Who What Wear predicted the funnel-neck jacket would be "a mainstay for fall and winter", and it suits this temperature well. Zipped to the chin it blocks wind; open, it vents.
The layering formula
| Layer | At 10°C / 50°F | Colour job |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Merino crewneck, fine rollneck or long-sleeve tee | Show it at the collar and cuff |
| Mid | Cardigan, overshirt, gilet or soft blazer | Your main colour indoors |
| Coat | Light wool coat, trench or funnel-neck jacket | Neutral, worn open |
| Extras | Wrap scarf, thin gloves, a beanie in the bag | The bright note when buttoned |
Let the colour through
At Prada for autumn/winter 2026, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons built a whole show from layers that peeled open to show what was beneath, including shirts with exaggerated pink cuffs poking out of sweaters and jackets. It is the most useful runway idea for a ten-degree day, because it treats the edges of each layer as places to put colour.
Here is how that works in practice. Choose a neutral coat, camel, navy or grey, and assume you will wear it open most of the day. Then plan for the three places colour will show: the collar, the cuffs and the strip down the front where the coat falls open. A tangerine merino rollneck under a navy cardigan under a camel coat gives you a bright stripe at the throat and at each wrist, and keeps the overall look calm. A cherry red cardigan worn buttoned, so it reads as a top, under a grey coat gives you one long vertical of colour that lengthens the body.
The worst thing you can do is bury your best colour. A pink jumper beneath a coat buttoned to the neck and a black scarf might as well be grey. If the coat goes on, something bright has to go on top of it.
Scarves, gloves and the bright note outside
This is where accessories earn their keep. W Magazine noticed wrap scarves at Loewe, Saint Laurent, Valentino, Celine and Loro Piana this season, worn at the neck or the waist, and knitted beanies and scarves at Chloé, Bottega Veneta and Stella McCartney. FashionUnited's accessory forecast called oversized shawls "wearable blankets".
At ten degrees, a big wool wrap is the most adaptable thing you own. Wrapped twice at the throat it does the job of a heavier coat. Unwound and draped, it is decoration. Choose it in a colour that disagrees pleasantly with the coat: a moss coat with a raspberry wrap, a charcoal coat with a mustard one. Gloves at this temperature can be thin unlined leather or knit, and they are a second chance for colour at the very end of the arm, where people look when you talk.
Trousers, skirts and shoes
Below the waist, think mid-weight. Wool flannel trousers, needlecord, dark denim or a midi skirt in wool with opaque tights all sit happily at ten degrees. Bare ankles are a choice you will regret by dusk, so wear socks with loafers, and let them be a colour. Leather lace-ups, loafers and ankle boots are right; save sheepskin for colder days.
Rain matters more than cold at this time of year. The Met Office notes that in autumn the weather quite often gets stormier. A leather shoe with a rubber sole and a bag that does not mind getting wet will save more mornings than an extra jumper. A jelly bag is useful here: it wipes clean, shrugs off a shower, and in bubblegum or lime it gives a grey coat the bright note it needs without asking you to unbutton anything.
What to wear in 10 degrees weather, three ways
For the office, start with a navy merino rollneck and button a cherry cardigan over it as a top. Grey flannel trousers, burgundy socks, brown loafers and a camel coat worn open finish it. The red sits in a column between the lapels all day.
At the weekend, a cream long-sleeve tee goes under a moss quilted gilet, with dark straight jeans and brown lace-up boots. Throw a raspberry wool wrap over the lot and stuff a beanie in the bag for later, when the sun goes in.
For the evening, wear a black fine-knit rollneck with a plum wool midi skirt, black opaque tights and pointed ankle boots. Belt a trench at the waist and carry a small scarlet bag low in the hand. Plum and scarlet are close enough to feel related and far enough apart to spark.
A bright note for grey days
On the in-between days, the bag is often the only part of the outfit everyone sees. jelli.world makes jelly bags in colours that hold up under a grey sky.
Common questions
Is 10 degrees cold enough for a winter coat?
Usually not. At 10°C (50°F) a mid-weight wool coat, trench or funnel-neck jacket over two layers is warmer and more adaptable than a padded winter coat. Add a scarf if it is windy or you will be standing still.
What should I wear in 10 degrees and rain?
Swap the wool coat for a trench or waterproof jacket, keep a wool base layer underneath, and wear rubber-soled leather shoes. Choose a bag that wipes clean.
How do I keep colour in my outfit when I wear a coat?
Put colour where the coat opens: collar, cuffs and front. Then add one bright accessory on top of the coat, such as a scarf, gloves or a bag.
