All Black, More Texture: The Black Fur Bag

Black outfits fail in one way. They go flat.

Black outfits fail in one way. They go flat.

A black coat, black trousers and black boots can look sharp. They can also look like a hole in the photograph. The difference is texture.

That is the quiet lesson of this winter's runways. The Schön! review of Fendi's AW26 show described a Baguette "in plush shearling" alongside versions "kept sleek and minimalist" in black leather. Same bag. Different surface.

The Black Fluff bag does that for an all-black outfit. It is Mongolian lamb, long and curly, in a deep, soft black. Against wool it reads as depth. Against leather it reads as warmth. In a photograph it gives the eye somewhere to land.

Build the outfit in layers of surface.

Smooth. A black wool coat or a leather jacket.

Fine. A black knit, merino or cashmere, close to the body.

Hard. Black boots with a little shine.

Soft. The bag.

One rule: four textures, one colour. If two pieces feel the same to the touch, swap one.

Black fur is also the most forgiving shade of Fluff. It hides dust and city grime better than the pale ones. It looks right in the office, at dinner and on a long walk.

Care is the same for every colour. Shake it out after carrying so the curls lift. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Use your fingers, not a brush, which pulls the curl straight. Keep it out of heavy rain and away from radiators, and store it loosely in spring.

The bag is 45 × 35 × 20 centimetres, with two slim handles long enough for the shoulder.

Add one silver ring and you're done.

All black is easy. All black that people notice takes one soft thing.
