Lit From Within: Frosted Lilac for Short Days

In December the sun sets at four. A frosted pastel holds what light is left.

In December, the sun sets at four. The light that's left is thin and blue. Most colours give up in it.

A frosted pastel doesn't. It seems to hold the light and give it back.

The Light Purple Jelly Bag is a structured TPU bucket, 35 × 25 × 14 centimetres. The finish is frosted, the colour a pale lilac. Light passes into the surface and spreads, so the bag looks lit from inside. On a grey day it is the brightest thing on the street without being loud.

That is the texture story of the season, told in plastic. The runways were full of surfaces that move and change in the light. Vogue called it dressing as "a full sensory experience". A frosted bag is part of that: it looks soft before you touch it.

How to wear lilac in winter.

With black. The strongest contrast. Lilac on a black coat looks modern and a little bit cool.

With grey. The quietest. The two colours share a coolness and sit easily together.

With silver. Silver earrings, silver rings. Gold fights with lilac; silver agrees with it.

With dark denim. The easiest everyday pairing.

One rule: lilac is the light, not the theme. One pale thing, everything else dark.

Inside, a grey or black pouch keeps the frosted finish looking clean and the contents private. A white one makes the lilac look paler still.

Care is simple. A soft damp cloth with mild soap. No solvents. Keep it away from radiators, and out of strong sun for long periods, which fades translucent colours over time.

Put it down on a white café table and it glows a little.

Some bags are for long summer evenings. This one is for the short winter afternoons, when you need a little light to carry around.
