The Christmas Bag: Red, Soft and Ready

Something red, something soft, something that looks good in candlelight.

Christmas dressing has a short list of rules. Something red. Something soft. Something that looks good in candlelight.

One bag covers all three.

The Red Fluff bag is real Mongolian lamb, dyed a warm, clear red. The wool is long and curly, still on the skin it grew on. It moves when you walk and catches every light in the room: fairy lights, candles, the glow from a window on a dark street.

This winter's mood is texture and movement, and the Christmas version of it is simply this: wear the softest thing you own, and make it red.

Christmas Eve. A black velvet dress, sheer black tights, flat shoes. The red bag on the arm.

Christmas lunch. A cream knit and dark jeans. The bag on the back of the chair, where everyone can see it.

The party. A black tuxedo jacket over a slip dress. Red bag, red lipstick, nothing else red.

Boxing Day walk. A navy coat, a grey scarf, boots. The bag on the shoulder, swinging.

One rule: red appears twice at most. The bag and one other thing, like a lip or a ribbon in the hair.

It is a bag that photographs well, which matters in a season of photographs. Against dark clothes, the red fur reads clearly even in low light.

Real fur needs a little care through a busy season. Shake it out after each outing so the curls lift. Spot clean marks with a barely damp cloth. Keep it away from candles, open fires and radiators, and out of the rain.

On New Year's Eve, wear it again. Red fur doesn't belong to one night.

It is 45 × 35 × 20 centimetres, big enough for a present or two on the way to someone's house.
