Purple, After Dark: The Moody Jelly Bag

Some colours look better when the light goes.

Purple is one of them. In daylight it is a colour. At dusk it turns into a shadow with a glow in it.

The Purple Jelly Bag is a structured TPU bucket, 35 × 25 × 14 centimetres. It is translucent, so the colour seems to sit inside the material rather than on it. Hold it up to a window and it lights from within. Put it on a dark coat and it goes deep.

That is what makes it a winter bag. Summer jelly is about brightness. This is about depth.

With black. The easiest pairing. A black coat, black boots, and a purple bag that reads almost like a jewel.

With grey. Charcoal flannel or a grey knit softens the purple and makes it look expensive.

With brown. Less obvious, and better for it. Chocolate and purple are an old autumn pairing, the colours of plums and bare branches.

One rule: no other purple. Let the bag be the only one.

Because it is translucent, what you carry shows through as shapes. A small dark pouch inside keeps it neat and private, and adds a second layer of colour behind the first.

Try it with a burgundy scarf for a darker evening look.

The bag is wipe-clean. A soft damp cloth and a drop of mild soap is all it needs. Keep it away from solvents and radiators, and out of long hours of strong sun, which can fade translucent colours over time.

It holds a bottle and a pouch with room to spare, and stands up on its own when you put it down.

Some bags are for summer evenings. This one is for the early ones in November, when it is dark by five and the street lights come on.
