Frosted, Clear or Glossy: Reading a Jelly Finish

Same shape, same size, nearly the same colour, and still nothing alike.

Two jelly bags can be the same shape, the same size and nearly the same colour, and still look nothing alike. The difference is the finish.

There are three to know.

Clear. You see straight through. The bag becomes a frame for what's inside.

Frosted. The surface is softly matte, like glass that has been breathed on. Light passes through but shapes blur. It feels calmer and more private.

Glossy. The surface shines. Colour sits on top, saturated and bright. It reads as playful, almost like boiled sweets.

Winter changes which one works best.

Clear can look cold against a grey sky. Glossy can look like a holiday. Frosted sits in between: it has the softness of a winter morning, and it doesn't show every fingerprint or every receipt.

The Ice East West is a good example. It is frosted PVC in a pale, cool blue, 35 × 19 × 15 centimetres, cut long and low to sit under the arm. The colour is barely there. It looks like frozen water, or the inside of a shell.

How to wear a frosted finish.

With grey. Pale blue and soft grey are winter's quietest pairing.

With cream. Warmer. The blue looks icier against it.

With denim. The easiest. It makes the bag look like part of the outfit rather than an accessory.

One rule: frosted bags like matte clothes. Wool, flannel, suede. Save the satin for glossy bags.

Care is the same for every finish. A soft damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Dry with a clean cloth. No alcohol, acetone or bleach, which can fog or crack the surface. Keep it away from radiators, hairdryers and long hours of strong sun.

Choose the finish first. The colour comes after.
